An alternant to the hollow core theory. The earth starts out as a molten globe similar to yhe sun. As it cools, a portion of the matter solidifies and floats on the surface(like pond skum). Let's say this floating portion is disturbed in some manner ( meterites?) The floating island of solidified matter is broken up and realigns to its present arangement where it remains as the remainder of the present thin crust solidifies. As the crust cools down, the water that had(due to the surface heat) been forced to be in vapor form, begins to liquify an fall to the surface and form the oceans.
